This Science Week, RTE’s Futureville series reimagined Athlone in the year 2050, exploring how science and technology could transform our town.

The show delved into how advancements could improve various aspects of life in Athlone, including housing, transportation, healthcare, and education.

Athlone offers a great lifestyle with all the essentials conveniently close by. Its central location in Ireland makes Dublin, Galway, and other destinations easily accessible, by car or potentially future advancements in sustainable transportation. However, like many places, Athlone faces challenges like traffic congestion, rising living costs, and especially a tight housing market.

This is where RTE’s Futureville series comes in. The show explores how science and technology can be harnessed to improve these and other aspects of life.  Futureville delves into possibilities like:

Sustainable transportation solutions: Imagine congestion-free commutes or eco-friendly options for travelling to nearby towns and cities.

Smart housing solutions: Could technology streamline the housing market or even lead to innovative housing developments?

Technological advancements for daily life: Perhaps VR technology can enhance education or telemedicine can improve healthcare access.

Mersus Technologies  was featured in last night’s episode which showcased the potential of immersive technologies for workplace training and education. Co-founder Geoff Allen joined the show to discuss the benefits of virtual reality training, including increased accessibility and standardised training delivery across an organisation.

Futureville’s ideas could be applied to any town or city, but the show also highlighted Athlone’s unique characteristics, such as its position as a regional centre and its location on the River Shannon, which could be leveraged for sustainable transportation solutions in the future.

The series is available to watch on the RTE Player. Mersus were proud to have been part of this inspiring exploration of Athlone’s future potential!
