Marketing in a digital age (Demo)

“Thought leaders and marketing experts from around the world have concluded that content marketing isn’t just the future, it’s the present” (www.cmi.com, 2015)

This bold statement comes directly from the ‘home’ of content marketing in the US. It seems the thought processes to traditional marketing have evolved to meet the current trend for all things web based. Think about the normal carriers of advertising i.e. newspapers and magazines.  Both of these mediums are now easily accessed online, in fact a recent report from The Guardian in the UK shows that over 55% of adults have switched from traditional newspaper to reading the news online via tablets or smartphones.  Television advertising is obviously more expensive but even tv is not adverse to new trends -we can now record our tv shows to watch at a later time, happily allowing us to ‘skip’ passed the ads.

Who’s using it and why?

According to the CMI, content marketing is being used by some of the most well known global brands including Microsoft and Procter and Gamble (P&G) with vast amounts of their marketing budgets being designated to content marketing into 2015 and beyond. The theory behind content marketing is to provide and deliver information in a consistent and informative way and consumers will reward with their “business and loyalty”.  The catch then is deciding upon the ‘content’. What can you / your business say that will be valuable to consumers?

Digital statistics in Ireland

IMS marketing have concluded that over half of the Irish population (approx 1.7 million people) own a smartphone and 1 in 4 have access to a tablet. The mobile marketing phenomenon was one of the top 5 digital marketing trends in 2014 and is only set to increase. With these statistics in mind, the way forward is to join the trend and employ some form of content management into your marketing strategy.
